Nurses' Corner – Becoming a Caldicott guardian

So we are now nearly half way through 2019 and what a year it has been so far. With plenty of projects in the pipeline, it looks like 2019 is likely to keep on getting busier.

We have been working hard on a number of projects as a business and also projects that I have been driving personally, including recently becoming the company Caldicott Guardian.

So, some of you might be thinking, what on earth is a Caldicott Guardian?

Well, a Caldicott Guardian is a senior person within a business responsible for protecting the confidentiality of people's health and care information and making sure it is used properly. Given today is the 1st anniversary of GDPR, it seemed only right to talk about how we are protecting people’s personal data.

There are 7 Caldicott principles we are following are:

I attended my first training session a few months ago where we covered a vast array of topics relating to being a Caldicott Guardian. The course reviewed information from the NHS, BMA, Department of Health & Social Care and the Care Quality Commission.

Following the training, it has allowed me to outline some short and long-term goals as the company Caldicott Guardian including scheduling regular meetings with the Group Compliance Team and implementing a Caldicott decision log across the group. It is also important that I help to raise the profile of the Caldicott principles and the role it will play in our business moving forward.

Premex+ and companies across the Premex Group adhere to these principles which in turn complements our ISO 27001 certification. In the later part of 2018 we underwent an ISO re-certification audit across the Bolton and Durham sites. We passed the audit with flying colours, continuing to show our commitment to security which is a fundamental aspect of the day-to-day running of the business.
